Opens in a focused full-screen view. Vs-computer plays offline instantly; online rooms are server-authoritative with hidden cards/tiles kept secret per seat.
How to play
Press New Game to open the board in a focused full-screen view. Move by dragging a piece or tapping a square then its destination — legal targets show as dots, captures as rings, and the game’s last move and any check are highlighted. Promotions ask which piece you want (no silent auto-queen). The board faces your colour automatically, and a move list records the game in standard notation.
Every rule is enforced: castling, en passant, promotion, and all draws — stalemate, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, and insufficient material.
Difficulty — eight tiers, Pawn to Grandmaster
Choose Vs Computer and pick a level:
- Pawn → Master (1–6): a clean-room engine (alpha-beta search with a tapered piece-square evaluation). Pawn to Expert pick at random on every move, a weighted choice among a few strong moves they find, and Pawn, Casual, Club and Strong also play a random move now and then. Master picks among near-best moves only in its first four moves, then plays the move its search finds.
- IM & GM / Max (7–8): Stockfish running entirely in your browser (lazy-loaded only when you pick these tiers). At IM, Stockfish’s strength is limited to 2500 Elo; GM / Max plays at full strength. If Stockfish can’t load, the clean-room engine plays at Master level.
Openings usually vary from game to game, though two games can still play out the same.
The Stockfish tiers are used only against the computer.
